Shubert honored by Liberty League

Bard senior Matt Shubert averaged 18.7 points per game in his return to the lineup last week.
Over the summer, Bard College senior basketball player Matt Shubert found out that the NCAA had determined he had only one semester of eligibility left.

Shubert went with the team and played as part of a summer trip to Ireland, but once actually practices began in the fall back here on campus, he had to take a seat. NCAA rules stipulated that not only did he have to sit for games in the fall semester, but he couldn't practice with the team, either.

This past week, he returned with a vengeance, and the Liberty League has recognized him for his efforts, naming him a Performer of the Week.

Shubert's first game back was on Tuesday at Vassar. He scored 27 points, including a pair of free throws with three seconds left, to lift Bard to an historic 59-57 victory. It was not only Bard's first-ever game in the Liberty League, but it was the first time Bard had beaten Vassar since 1995.

Shubert had 16 points and five rebounds against Skidmore on Friday, then 13 points and three steals against Union on Saturday. After one week in Liberty League play, Shubert is averaging 18.7 points per game.

Bard's next game is Tuesday night against Liberty League foe RPI at 8 p.m. It will be preceded by the women's game against RPI at 6 p.m.
