Pictured above is the St. Stephen's College men's basketball team for the 1933-34 season. At the time this photo was taken, the entire student body at the school consisted of 102 men.
What that meant was that most athletes played more than one sport. In the case of this team, John Burgevin, the leading scorer on the men's basketball team, also played soccer in the fall and baseball in the spring; Paul Woodruff, the second-leading scorer on the basketball team, also played baseball.
Coach Stanley Leeke, shown on the right, also coached soccer and baseball. (This team went 4-7.)
Those not interested in soccer in the fall could run cross country; if you weren't a basketball player, ice hockey was a varsity sport in 1933-34; in the spring you could play tennis if baseball wasn't your thing. There were also intramurals offered in sports like bowling and softball.
It was 1934 when the school was renamed Bard College after John Bard, who founded St. Stephens in 1860. That was a long time ago.
Even today, though, Bard counts on multi-sport athletes. Some of those athletes make a transition from running cross country to running track - but others make a bigger jump. Especially rare are three-sport athletes, but it has happened recently.
Jessica Philpott played volleyball, basketball and lacrosse last year;
Maddy Huggins played soccer, basketball and lacrosse last year, and may do that again this year. If
Lena James plays lacrosse again this spring, she'll be a three-sport athlete, as will freshmen
Hallie Nolan and
Joanna Regan if they decide to play lacrosse.
Here is a list of current Bard student-athletes who compete in more than one sport for the Raptors - keep in mind the list won't be completely up-to-date until it's confirmed which freshmen are playing spring sports:
