Raptors top Green Mountain, snap losing streak

Freshman Siondueh Burnette had nine points and 10 rebounds in a victory over Green Mountain College on Tuesday night.
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's basketball team snapped a 10-game losing streak on Tuesday night, holding off Green Mountain College in a non-conference game, 71-59.

It's the fourth win of the season for Bard (4-16) - the most wins in a season for the men's basketball program here since the 2007-2008 campaign, which ended at 8-17.

Green Mountain (4-15) never led in the game, but also never really went away. Bard jumped out to a 12-3 lead, and with 51 percent shooting in the first half, held a 12-point edge at halftime, 37-25. The Raptors were dominating inside, scoring 24 of their 37 points in the paint.

But the Eagles came back right away to start the second half on the strength of three consecutive three-pointers - by freshmen Jeremiah Aponte (Copiague, NY), Jakerion Ales (Batesville, MS) and Jack Hepburn (Miller Place, NY) - and Bard's lead was trimmed to 40-34 with just 2:08 gone in the second stanza.

The Raptors responded, increasing the lead to 11 a few minutes later, but Green Mountain cut it to seven three different times, the last time with 8:49 left in the game. A 9-0 run that started with a dunk from freshman Jose Canario and ended with a three-pointer from senior Matt Shubert pushed the lead back to 15, and Green Mountain didn't get closer than nine the rest of the way.

Canario made 10-of-11 shots from the field, and led all scorers with 22 points in 23 minutes. Shubert added 11 points and five assists, and freshman Siondueh Burnette contributed nine points and 10 rebounds.

Next up for Bard is a return to Liberty League action, Friday at 8 p.m. at St. Lawrence University.

Green Mountain got 17 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals from freshman Carnelius Green (Oviedo, FL), who played the whole second half in foul trouble. Freshman Jack Hepburn (Miller Place, NY) added 12 points. The Eagles next host SUNY Canton on Friday in a North Atlantic Conference game.
