ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - On Saturday, the Bard College men's lacrosse team will wrap up the 2017 season with a non-league game against SUNY Cobleskill.
The event will double as a benefit for former Bard player Harrison Mauldin, who recently began chemotherapy to battle lymphoblastic lymphoma, which is a rare form of leukemia. He was diagnosed with this condition in March.
Harrison Mauldin played lacrosse for the Raptors in 2014 and 2015 before leaving Bard in 2016; he would have been a senior on the team this spring. After 10 months of intensive chemotherapy, he is to undergo three years of treatment. It is hoped that he and his family will be able to attend Saturday's game.
The men's lacrosse team will warm up in custom designed t-shirts for the occasion, and extra t-shirts will be on sale at the game as a fundraiser for the Mauldin family, who have overwhelming current and future medical expenses. They will also wear Harrison's initials on their helmets, part of an effort created by legendary New York high school coach Roy Colsey, called Helmets for Harrison. Coach Colsey has collected photos of helmets worn by collegiate players who graduated from Harrison's high school alma mater, Ridgefield (Conn.) High School, and put his initials near their facemasks.
Harrison was one of the pioneering recruits who helped Bard launch men's lacrosse in 2014. He played every game that season at long stick midfielder, causing 26 turnovers and collecting 53 ground balls - and he even added a goal and an assist.
Over that winter, Mauldin was one of the lacrosse players at the scene when Bard students Evelina Brown and Sarah McCausland were struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver. The men's lacrosse team wore stickers on their helmets during the 2015 season to remember the two young women.
That spring, Bard joined the Liberty League and the level of competition jumped considerably. Harrison played in 13 games at LSM, was third on the team with 41 ground balls and scored three times. One of those goals was huge, spurring a second-half comeback in Bard's stunning 9-8 victory over Skidmore on Apr. 4. It was Bard's first victory in Liberty League play.
A Facebook page has been created to allow Harrison's family to communicate more easily with those who are concerned; you can find that page

A separate fundraising site is being utilized to raise money for the Mauldins. Make your donation

Saturday's game starts at noon. If you can't make it, live stats and live video are available.
